Run a program or script when a file is added to a folder
Connect anything you already have to a folder: your own program, a .bat file or a PowerShell script. The service handles watching, queueing and logging.
This product is not on sale or available for download yet. We are checking whether businesses need it, and its scope may still change.
Why your own script is not enough
Watching a folder in your own script is easy until an event is lost, a half-written file is picked up or the script stops after a restart. The service handles these cases, and your script only gets complete files.
What the action should do
- Run an .exe, .bat, .cmd or PowerShell script
- Pass arguments with variables, such as "{fileName}" or {folder}
- Decide success or failure by the exit code
- Stop the program after a time limit
- Store the program’s output in the job log
- Only a computer administrator can add this action
Examples
- Import XML orders into your own business system
- Run a conversion or data check for every new export
- Notify an internal system when a new file arrives
How the program will work
- Runs in the background as a Windows service, even when nobody is signed in
- For each folder you set a file mask, such as *.pdf, and the actions to run
- Actions can be chained, for example convert to PDF/A, sign and send by e-mail
- Processed files are moved to an archive, failed ones are set aside with an error description
- Files are processed on your computer or network and are not uploaded anywhere unless that is the action’s purpose
Frequently asked questions
Which account runs the program?
The service account. It can be set to a domain account if the program needs access to network shares.
Is it safe?
The action runs with the service’s rights, so only an administrator can add it and the program marks it as sensitive.
Will this action be free?
Yes. We plan running programs as part of the free basic edition.
